Want some blogging tips you can implement right now to boost your traffic and Click Through Rate (CTR)?
Most people reading this post will know who Neil Patel is.
If you don't, Neil is one of the Internet's most successful marketers and bloggers. He's the co-founder of Crazy Egg, Hello Bar and KISSmetrics. He helps companies like Amazon, NBC, GM, HP and Viacom grow their revenue. And he's been recognized by President Obama as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30.
I recently signed up for a free webinar by Neil. Because it was free I wasn't expecting him to give away too much. I thought maybe there'd be one or two cool blogging tips.
Boy, was I wrong!
I was taking notes and I literally couldn't keep up.
This is what I learned (there were more tips to boost your traffic, but this is what I managed to write down).
Blogging Tip #1 - Boost Your Traffic By Stealing Your Competitor’s Backlinks
Of these 7 blogging tips to boost your traffic, this is probably the most powerful.
Install Domain Hunter + (a Google Chrome Extension) to search for broken links on websites that link to sites in your niche. Yes that’s right – find websites with broken links to your competitors. How cunning is that!
Then send them an email, point out to them that they have broken links and suggest they link to your site instead.
This strategy works very well because website owners are:
- too busy to go checking on broken links on their website
- too lazy to go looking for links to replace the broken ones
But there’s a knack to this – you have to send two emails. The first email is just to break the ice, to engage the other website owner in conversation.
I was looking through your suggested links on DOMIAN.com and noticed a few broken ones. Let me know if you would like me to send you a list of them.
When they respond to that email you can then send them this email:
Here are the broken links: ABC.com, ABCD.com, ABCDE.com, and ABCDEF.com
And if you’re wondering what URL to replace the links with, check out YOURDOMAIN.com. It provides similar information to the above broken links, but as you can see the URL isn’t dead. 😉
Blogging Tip #2 - Turbocharge Your Optin Form
Ask a Yes/No question on your Optin form.
Everyone knows that lead magnets work like gangbusters getting new subscribers.
But did you know that asking a simple “Yes/No” question before offering the lead magnet will increase your sign-up rate by 20 to 30%?
Blogging Tip #3 - Use a Tripwire
A tripwire is an irresistible offer people can’t say 'No' to.
You generally don’t make any money on the tripwire itself. But you can get at least 30% of those people who took up the low-end offer to buy a premium product.
For example, Neil Patel created a plugin that blocks off a portion of your content and says if you want to read the rest of this content, click on the Like button. It was only $7 so he didn’t make much money from it. But at checkout he sold those customers another product at $100 to $200.

Blogging Tip #4 - Engage before Popping the Question
Getting email subscribers is a bit like dating. You need to engage with them first.
Anytime you ask your visitor to perform an action before asking for an email address (enter a URL, answer a question, enter a budget amount etc) your chance of getting an email sign up dramatically increases.
An example of this is the CREW website. They engage their visitor with a quiz containing a whole bunch of questions about the kind of app they want. Right at the end of the quiz, they ask for your name, email address etc.

Blogging Tip # 5 - Make Signing-Up Easy
Use Google Authentication to allow people to sign up using their Google ID.
Neil implemented this on his website KISSmetrics and saw his sign-up rate increase by 59.4%.
He also replaced the word ‘sign-up’ with the word ‘login’ and got a further 16% increase in sign-ups.
Blogging Tip #6 - Use Geo IP to Personalise Your Visitor’s Experience
Using a service such as Maxmind, you can insert your visitor’s location.
Say you were offering SEO to local businesses.
Someone in London sees the message: “I’m determined to make a business in London successful. My only question is, will it be yours?”
But someone looking at the same website in Las Vegas would see Las Vegas instead of London.
Blogging Tip #7 - Simple Changes to Increase Your Click Through Rate (CTR)
This is a great tip to boost your traffic, using data about how people are finding you in the organic search results.
Login to Google Search Console and click on queries.
You’ll see a list of the queries that people typed in to Google in order to find individual pages on your site.
Whenever your CTR is less than 5% you can almost certainly improve it by making a few simple changes:
1) Include your keywords in the title tag and the meta description. That way, when your page comes up in a Google Search, Google will bold those words in the title and it causes more clicks
2) Include one of these 10 keywords to skyrocket your CTR:
- How To
- List-related number
- Blog Post
Once you’ve made these changes, you need to force Google to re-crawl your site:
- Go into Google Console
- Click on Crawl menu
- Then Fetch as Google
- Enter your URL
- Then click Fetch and Render
- Then click ‘Submit to Index’
I was blown away by these tips to boost your traffic and CTR from Neil Patel.
So much so, that I immediately typed up my notes, along with screen captures, so that I'd have a permanent record.
I haven’t implemented them all, let alone had time to measure the results.
But I will be, and that’ll be the topic for another blog post.
